General Service Unit (GSU) replaced Administration Police (AP) officers guarding Deputy President William Ruto during the funeral of the late nominated Senator Victor Prengei in Nakuru County.
On Saturday, August 28,2021, a heavy contingent of General Service Unit (GSU) officers moved in to take charge of security during the funeral event of the late nominated lawmaker.
The turn of event looked like a new security protection protocol for the Deputy President at Gichaki grounds, Mariashoni, Nakuru County.
However, it is not clear if the move to replace Administrative Police officers with those from the General Service Unit (GSU) at the event is in line with the demands that were made by Ruto in his letter to Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai calling for the redeployment of members of the elite unit.
According to Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya the move to deploy General Service Unit (GSU) officers was a normal procedure.
“The deployment of General Service Unit (GSU) officers to Senator Victor Prengei’s funeral is a normal procedure to beef up security, contain masses of pandemic restrictions and avert eruption of tribal conflict which occurs in Mariashoni,” Natembeya stated.
Speaking during the funeral, Ruto stated that he was busy assembling an economic plan and that he will not engage any government official on matters regarding the withdrawal of his security.
The second in command insisted that his focus was on how to create jobs for the youths and security for the Kenyan through his bottom-up economic model.
“I’m sorry I will have to disappoint those gentlemen who want us to talk about power and positions and security, I’m busy assembling an economic plan that will see to it that we create jobs for the youth and security for all,” Ruto started.
A total of 77 General Service Unit (GSU) officers were withdrawn from Ruto’s security detail and replaced with 26 security of the Government Buildings Unit (GBU) of the administrative police service.
This contravened with the National Police Service (NPS) orders, which states that the Government of which Ruto is part, is meant to be guarded by General Service Unit (GSU).
